how about a handicap event thrown in somewhere.... encourage the slower boaters to enter

boats start with smallest hp first ?

Not a bad idea, in fact better still have a social fishing just for 40/50 hp and less and even leccies only welcome but guess that may have to be up river.  Oh yes and female boaters start first and also later starts like 9am as they need their sleep the gain strength!  Man comps are just way too early for me!

And $30 membership is a reasonable price.  Churches may even lease out a hall at a good price or the Swan River Trust  or Fisheries may assisted with their conference rooms, maybe.

While we are going to put the idea of the handicaps for higher powered craft out for people to comment on, we cant put a max limit on horsepower as that is nowdays going to cut out quite a few experienced fishos for people to learn off.  We also cant be sexist and have later starts for females sorry carol.  I was toying with the idea of letting leccy boats in for some events as well and giving them an hours headstart.  Of course weekends away we can have later starts saturday and earlier finishes sunday  to accommodate people travelling.

OH.. and free lip gloss and maybe we could launch your boat for you while someone else does your nails...

Seeing as my boat has a large'sh donk, and isnt properly propped yet, I guess I should comment :D

I dont mind hanging back a bit for smaller boats to get a head start, but would be a hard thing to figure out.

For example if we go down the way of 4 hour sessions and I am not allowed to start for 30 minutes to allow smaller boat to get a decent head start, giving me 3.5 hours - travel time to fish I dont think I would find it enjoyable.

I think it is fair start orders could be slowest boat to fastest boat, but then the guys in smaller boats are just going to have the bigger boats scream by them and create chop.

I think this could become another "Gulp" discussion. Do you handicap people who have invested in bigger donks? I think being social events you dont always have to start near open water. Have a comp up Guildford way, everyone is going the same speed then.

Anyway another tricky situation, and my very vauge 2 cents about it ;)

Ta for the quick reply Brad, was only s/stirrin about the female part!   Had my boat been fixed by some bloke who keeps promising, there would have been an extra boat out there! But guess that always comes last as everything else and fishing comes first!   And lip gloss is not good to me Becker, nail polish would be a lot handier!

Having a start in the slow zone would be a sure winner. Makes all equal.

I completely agree with you Shane.

i like the way that the classics are run. first in with their entry first out. if the slower boats want to get out first they have to get their entry in first. creates a competitive market. I definately would be against anything that discriminated against what type of boat you have. at the end of the day how many times have you actually got to a spot to have someone fishing it and catching big fish off it. by all means reverse the order for the second day.

look at the last classic. heaps of boats pulled up at the narrows first off but it wasnt until an hour or 2 into it that the fish came on the bite and by that time all the boats had left. there are plenty of spots out there especially if you think outside the square.

another point that i would like to raise is, i think that the comps should be limited to a certain size for the first year or so. set a maximum of 20-25 boats to create a competitive market to get into. i think this will force people to get off their butts sooner and enter. if they dont they miss out. i think smaller comps more frequently would be better than a few big comps. also puts less pressure on the waterways,

I agree with most of this but the only reason my mates get  good numbers on the greenough and carnarvon social weekends is because its simple and we always let the little guys go first. We already have the classics and abt so why not try something different. Try a social weekend and make it tinnys only just for the little guys (and girls) and see what happens. My lot are just a social group but we never have less than 11 boats and the only problem we have is travel due to a lot of them living all over the place. We only have 5 leckies but we do use lures and just drift. Its only a couple times a year but its good to catch up and small boats are affordable to many. I think there is more than enough room for another boat class. They have this in nearly every other sport and its designed purely to get everyone involved so lets be conciderate and lead by example. This is just my opinion from my lot so im open for comments as i may be way off the mark in our local situation. This is also something that should be reviewed on B.M so someone else will have to take over from here.

I have a few ideas about setting it up and it will come later on, but as we know from past events guys in smaller boats do not enjoy being overtaken by high powered craft and left to wallow in the wake of half a dozen boats at once.  We want to encourage everyone and if it means allowing the 4m tinnies with 25 or 30hp go a couple of minutes before hand, we know the faster boats are probably going to catch them by the causeway upstream, and probably SPYC on the way to the canning.  We dont want to penalise the people who have invested in the sport, but we do want to try and equalise the time each angler has their lures in the water.  As szarn said, there are groups of other anglers around that we dont have contact with and want to be part of our group so long as they are treated fairly and get to fish as much as everyone else. I dont see anything unfair about that.

How much of a head start will I get in front of Don's new boat ;)

I dont mind letting the little boats go first, will get rid of the congestion of the start. As long as it isnt a stupidly long gap, I have had a slow boat and I know how long it takes to get places. Being social maybe we can let them go and pull the boats out and drive to another ramp.

Yes it is a comp, but it is also for social/fun. The bigger boats could tow a smaller boat to give them a bit of a speed increase ;)

I'm just curious and have a question or two.  Being a 'tournament club' that is soon to be, what is your planned mission statement  for the future within the breaming scene?  To have your club's own style of comps for anyone interested in competitions in  WA interested in lure C & R or to have comps following the Classics and ABT's guidelines and thus to encourage new participants to enter these comps as well.   Would any of these eventually negatively affect the Classics we have in WA as the cost would be hell cheaper and not all are competitive just for prizes.

Hope this doesn't come across the wrong way!

Ta, Miss Swan Pest!

Shane.........the idea of a handicap start for the smaller boats was only for the occaisional comp, not for all events. That just wouldn't be fair.

start points could also be rotated to different points around the river.

for smaller boats Coode street would be an ideal start point no handicaps needed there as a small boat can get to a good spot reasonably quickly.

ARGH NO!!! not mission statements. Sorry would have to have been the stupid'ist part of the management course I'm on.

Anyway, yeah *hangs out the ute window and revs the engine* SHOW US YA MISSION STATEMENT ;)

I believe that will be something they will sort out once they have offically launched the club and announced the commitee. But good suggestion Carol.

Yeah the start process wont be for every event, there will be a few different styles.  Again its still in the brainstorming stage, but keep the ideas coming.

Carol, since we plan to be a not for profit club, there wont be a mission statement.  That seems too much like a business for me.  We dont want the club to be a money making venture.  We want people to rock up and fish when we hold an event, get along, leave egos at home, have some fun and make new friends at the same time- not a "tournament club" but a social club.  Im not fussed obvioulsy if people do try and do well in each event, I know i will fish each one to my best ability but the key about it is social. I feel with all the rules and stuff it takes a bit of the socialness away but i would rather be organised social than one big floating armada of disorganised lure chuckers.  We will make our club rules for each event style that we intend to offer.

In regards to ABT and the classics we are right behind them and hope they are right behind us.  Personally I plan to fish them more in the next season as a competitive series and would like to see more people do the same and keep it relaxed with us.  We hope that we can encourage new and upcoming anglers into the sport a bit more and help them progress to the point where they will fish the classics and ABT events.

hehe im playing mr diplomat tonight, but this is how we see it.

Thanks for your quick reply Brad.  Nice reply, you have my total support! :)   I don't know what you do for a living but I have been reading your post and just through reading it, I can see you are rather professional in the way you handle things.  Good on ya.  And one thing that really caught my eye is that for a young man, you can really write and spell unlike some on the forum - good on ya.  I think you guys are doing a fantastic job, give yourself a pat on the back, and Dave and those in the background too.

Anyway, if you ever need a hand, let me know.  I used to be a professional typist many moons ago and type around 65 wpm and also familiar with dictaphone typing.  So if you have any websites or fliers/newsletters etc that needs some real intensive typing, just send me a PM.

Social relaxed fishing is great, been on some socials and comps in the past and sometimes it is rather clicky and discriminatory  in various areas mainly to the age group, and fishing status (this is feedback from various I have fished with in my own time).  Hope you guys will manage to break the ice for all.

Keep up the good work.
