I was privilaged to be invited to ride on Dons new stratos today. This boat is hell fast with instant pickup even at 40 knots and is mind blowing over the chop. We were behind Criss and approaching another cruiser when Don decided to put the peddle to the floor and take 2 murging wakes at 35 knots. Im not sure exactly how much air we got but i reckon Criss could have seen the other side of the river underneath the stratos without bending down. I nearly had a bloody heart attack because i didnt know it was gunna happen.
Criss stopped at the narrows and we moved on up to the canning where we pulled the odd smallish bream and grunter before we headed back to the ramp. As we left the canning we noticed that the big boats from South Perth Sailing Club were doing time trials and the river was chewed up with one meter of multi directional chop. As soon as i saw that smile on Dons face i knew what was going to happen next. The peddle hit the floor so fast it nearly left a dent and then we were cruising over the wave tops as smooth as if we were driving a new merc down the freeway.Twice he had the prop clear of the water on some of the larger boat wake and that grab handle on the passenger side consol quickly became my best friend.
By this time Don was feeling more at home behind the wheel so soon we were cruising next to mounts bay road at 115kph which was amazing because the duel consols block out the wind nicely so you dont actually feel like your moving that fast. We never got up to top speed but thats for next time. All up its a very nice boat to fish from and nice to ride in and Don was throwing it around like it was only 5 meters long . The 225 is great on power yet very quiet even at 4300rpm. These are a few photos from the day which was only made better when we got a message from Brad and Jen to say they have just become engaged. Congratulations from Don and myself.
