Hi all,

I am just wondering do people prefer to try to catch fish on Snapback's in a jerk bait or grub or use the quicker method of catching fish on a Gulp lure; which takes at least 5 Gulp lures to do that thanks to the blowies????????

I would like to see what the statistics are..

Suzie

The 2 inch snapbacks have better swimming action than the gulps and thats why i like to swim them on the flats.  If thats a photo your trying to get up just email it to me and i will hang it up for you.

ill take 5/1 on snapback grubs any day....

learn to fish them right and you will never go back (even when there are no blowies)....

bait is the worst lure to use for anglers starting out. IMO it makes ppl lazy and complacent.

i prefer to fish snapbacks for sure, eve's right learn to fish "real" plastics and then everything else is easy.

Most will know my answer before I post it, but I'll do it anyway.

Throuw the bait out (and I don't mean into the river with a hook attached), and tie on real plastics.  Doesn't have to be a snapback but if your that way inclined then do so, and get that technique working for you.  As Macca said, after learning with real plastics it'll make everything that much easier.

If your going to fish gulp why not just get some bread dough and shape it into a worm and fish that. Haha.

Unlike everyone else I won’t bag out gulp ;) I think it has its place and that's in my tackle bag :D But it all depends which system you are fishing, in the Swan I might toss a gulp early to get in before the blowies wake up and while the bream are still a little lethargic. I fish the sandworm in 3", I find you can get a wicked bit of action out of it. But I also put scent on my other pastics so I guess I am just a dirty bait fisho ;)

When the blowies wake up I go to the 2" snapback grub, I would replace all my 2" plastics with the snapback grub if it was cost effective, they have a very nice wiggle. Lately I have been rigging them on a 1/40 HWS, I find they get an unreal skip and fish really good for a slow drop and tempting fish just under boat hulls.

I haven’t really had as much luck on the 3" snappy minnows compared to the Berkley power minnow. Don’t rig these with the 1/40 HWS unless you want a floating lure ;) Going to give it a burl in summer and see if I can get some surface action :D

It's that opinion and thought that made it "ok" to fish it in tournaments in the first place.

It's hard to make the point because people are blinded by the fact they catch fish with it.  It's not a lure, not even close...and as such I won't be letting it go anytime soon.

Ok.the last time i had an opinion it lead to me getting deleted by someone who i used to respect so i will put it gently as such....i spent some time this week floating 4 inch snapbacks in the current up river. We were getting wacked by bream without moving the rod. My mates wife used the camo worms and got nothing. I swapped over to them and even on different retrieves i only got one fish. I went back to snapbacks and got more fish. We tried X facter which made a slight diffrence only. This is not the first time i have done this. They use garlic scent from garlic in Dizzy scent and they use vegetable protein in gulps. I dont see a huge difference. I have no idea whats in X facter and i wont even suggest anything that could upset the makers as with possible new comps comes a need for sponsers. You 2 guys are about to start some  action so if your that strong about it then have some comps without gulp. And before everyone jumps up and down you should realize that if gulp works enough to get some people interested in lures then thats a good thing. And even if i dont like gulp i dont keep putting it down all the time. I also post plenty of pics on my lure tests and hardly any feature the gulps. Everyone is welcome to an opinion but after returning from the tweed and talking to some people there i say we just respect all tackle and simply use what suits us best.

Having read my previous post..it kinda came out wrong.

What I meant to get at was that its well and good to have a fishing product that works, but IMO and many others it is not a lure.  It goes against the notion of luring a fish with an artificial...and as such I don't think it has a place in tournament fishing (ABT style artificial only).  I also don't like any scent that utilizes natural products, but I do see it as somewhat different as the product itself is still artificial and not simply compressed/molded food.  I don't know of any lures other than GULP where you can throw out a 1cm cube and catch bream.  These new lures are biodegradable because they are essentially consumable food product compressed into a shape.  I think the idea that "its all good, it catches fish" is detrimental to the tournament scene.  Great for fishing in general but no good for tournament sportfishing.

You also can't compare throwing a Snapback into current (hence water giving it action) to dead sticking a piece of GULP.  I also don't think GULP is better than real lures anymore... except maybe on those brutal shutdown days.  No GULP comps is definately on the horizon.  Won't be many I wouldnt think though...but something I think will be a welcome addition for many.

To me the definition of a lure is something that only catches fish if you actually move it. Having said that though i have cort buckets of trout on dams where the dry fly didnt even have wind to move it. And i have cort many fish at exmouth where the lure was simply floating on dead still water while i picked fluffys out of my overhaed reels. But i know what you mean . My point was that you never know who your going to have to rely on in the future so its good to just keep an open mind.

I hadnt used it (gulp) until the last Mandurah Classic.Thats just over a year since I began this form of fishing as I was told you cant learn how to fish properly  with lure if you use gulp. Now to cut a long story short I picked up the big bream in that comp with a 2" gulp worm. My reason for using it was everone who informed me not to use them seems to carry a dozen packs on comp day and by not using it im at a disadvantage. I also see everyone pouring scent over everything else they use so your not decieving the fish your inviting it to enquire what the smell in the water is.In saying all this by not using it for that long ive managed to catch dozens of bream with no scents and that is deception.I guess everthing has its place and the more you concentrate on a particular spieces you learn more about it and can catch them on whatever lure is in the bag.JMO

how did i know this topic was going to kick off at some stage ..... i dont want to enflame the situation anymore but want to offer this comment.

i agree with both gulpers and non gulpers in varing degrees. glup is potentialy a great tool for geting new anglers into lure fishing and its potentialy the ruin of leraning, experimenting & angler development.

i'm begining to lean toward daves way of thinking for tournament fishing where the aim is not simply to catch a fish but test the anglers ability. i think there are a range of issues which in a typical bream style tournament should be considered to test the anglers more fully. two of which are the use of "natural lures" and barbed hooks.

i dont think that anyone would disagree that eliminating these two items from tournaments would challange anglers more but it may do it at the risk of allienating new competitors. thats bad if the comp is a busieness, but if your an angling club ...... well thats a diferent kettle of non glup caught fish all together.

Bait or not I am not a huge fan of GULP because it has NO ACTION that is the main reason I hardly ever use it ......but I have used GULP in a comp and came 3rd does this make me a bad person ........I dont think so ?

I like watching my lure wiggle in the water not just sink down but thats just me

but to answer the question I would use snapbacks because you dont have to put on a new "lure" every 2nd cast

I dont know what type of Gulp you are using Nathan, but I make that baby wiggle and kick.

But I must say I really do love the action of the snapback grubs, even over oil based SP's. We should get a bunch of us together to buy in a big order to save some dosh ;)

This is the weekend derby of plastics, always going to be sides having a cry over which is the better/more appropriate. Use what you feel comfortable with :) and lets all just have fun catching fish :D

Next people will want to outlaw sfactor chicken fat ;)
