Hi all, currently looking to get a reel over from Japan.

Unfortunately I have a budget. Naturally with budgets, I have to include allowances for shipping.

I have been put onto 2 sites with good prices (well better than local prices for bloody sure anyway) japantackle and plat.co.jp

Anyway was thinking of putting my order through with plat. Went to checkout and a "handling charge" has appeared, comes to about $10AU. Still no shipping rate defined!!!

Look into it further I do.

Apparently once I have paid for the reel they will bill me seperately for post? Has anyone used this company?

I figure this double billing is where they will slug me and all of a sudden end up being more exxy that japtackle. It will also cost me 2 lots of bank fee's.

Share your experience's. I think despite potentially saving a few bucks it looks like I will opt for japantackle anyway since their shipping rates are clearly set and advertised. (I am very weary of these things now, I was a big fan of online shopping for best price until a very valuable package was lost in international transit last month, getting reimbursed or a replacement has been impossible, even though the sender has claimed insurance from the courier company!!)

Hi duck, l bought a  couple of reels early this year from platt for a friend, he saved $150 from retail price here in total and they arrived in about a week. l was impressed with there service to say the least.

If you have some worries with buying from them stick to your local dealer. It's always handy to build a relationship with your local tackle guy, as they normally get the good info on whats happening. If you have some issues with spending the extra, explain that to them and they might be able to help you out. l like to buy all my rods and reels locally as the warranty can be an issue with overseas purchases, but l buy small items from online, as l like to try new lures ect. that can't be found locally.

good luck

Drew

Cheers Drew

I ended up ordering a reel from Plat over the weekend. He emailed me to answer my questions about shipping and I have saved a substantial sum on a single item compared to buying locally.  I could have got one on eBay through Malaysia for similar dollars but decided I would feel more comfortable direct from Japan.

I agree that having a good relationship with local tackle shop guru's is a must, and this is my first online purchase for such a major tackle item. The reason for turning to this is because what was formerly the best tackle shop in Non-Coastal NSW, my local tackle shop, has been closed down.

I think the major thing with all this is that I have now ordered a rod and reel based solely on online info and have not had a feel of the things as I normally would in a store.  This is a massive disadvantage IMO. But I got the advice/info from people and places I think I can trust so I'll see how it goes.

Have to give Plat a huge rap right here.

My reel was delivered this morning!! This is quicker than my bank has even processed the payment transaction! (ie. the money is gone but the transaction doesn't display on any statement yet)

Now if only Nathan was on his game I would have got to run my new setup in tomorrow but instead, I guess I can use tomorrow to give the old Shimano kit a fitting farewell. It will soon be downgraded into the ranks of loan-gear (ie. the stuff I take out for mates who want to fish but don't know how/don't have their own gear.

I'm so excited.  It's going to be tough getting myself to stay at work the rest of the arvo!!
