The gulp minnow worms wriggle nicely when you swim them and so do the grubs.

For what its worth, all kilo fish at the comp the other week bar one were caught on lures other than gulp from my knowledge.  I got one on a sandworm that i threw in to basically see how bad the blowies were.  But hey i will take it.  I think and im sure nobody will disagree that your at a disadvantage if you dont at least have it on board in case you have trouble getting fish in a comp.  But socially you should be trying to get your technique right so you dont have to resort to gulp in the first place.  All of my big fish in last years WABT comps came on lures other than gulp.  The 1.4kg stonker at perth round came on a snapback as many regular kilo plus catchers fish with them.  Mandurah they came on a hard lure of sorts (contrary to what came out in the mag) Blackwood, berkley 2" grub, though i did fish some gulp that weekend when going got tough.

When your constantly fising gulp, I find that more smaller fish, grunter and blowies hit it rather than the bigger fish you want.  It seems blades, snapbacks, critters and marias are the most popular upgrading lure choices.  Apart from at walpole where it seems gulps are a major preference of inlet bream.  That is a shame, but like i said if your worried that you arent catching fish then use what you want.

I still think gulps are ok and my mind wont be changed and yes you did good at your last comp but more so because you were in the right place at the right time which still takes skill because you had to make the decision to stop there. I will say this tho, in the last week i have averaged 6 bream every night and lost more. I only allow myself one hour as thats all i get between jobs. I  used gulp for maybe 10 mins in the last 8 days and all my fish really came by  using normal plastics etc and as always my 6 foot 2-4 kilo rod.   Tonight however i got 4 bream without even moving the rod. All i did was cast out a 4 inch snapback and lay the rod on the grass. The bream were so aggressive that they were smacking the lure as it was bouncing along the bottom on a 1/32 jighead. Some say that gulp is bait and anyone can catch a bream on it.  They are very wrong as was seen at the last walpole comp.  You still have to know how to work them. How many  know to split the fry with scizzers to soften them up. How many  know how hot the water has to be to straighten them without turning them to tyre rubber. How many know how much silicon gel to use to make the tails float upright.  They are the same as any other lure in some ways and can be improved but i do agree that you wouldnt want to use a condom that was made out of the same stuff. I will always use my blades, snapbacks ,marias and critters before i reach for anything else and  if someone else in the same comp is using gulps then it wont bother me the least because i know that its not so much the lure but more the way you use it and you still have to be in the right place at the right time.
