Hey guys

So the new sounder i won on the weekend is an Eagle Seafinder 640c dual frequency colour jobby.

Its heaps better than my current lowrance x37 that is mounted at the console. I was going to get the lowrance moved to the front and have the eagle installed at the console but since its pretty flash and offers a better picture and fish finding tools than the basic lowrance, Im contemplating having it mounted at the front on the electric so i can hunt a bit more with it while im fishing.

The eagle does also come with a speed function which if i was to use it, would have to be mounted at the console but i already have a speedo in the console. Im not that fussed at having the extra speed measurement working or not.

Whats every ones opinions here?

Ok, well personally I'm not a huge fan of sounders for our style of fishing, however thats probably because of the fact that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to sounder use.

I'd probably go with the quality sounder at the console.  Purely because when your moving along you will be able to find the spots your looking for better....allowing you to then go fish it.

To be 100% honest, I'd sell it and use the money for something you actually needed/wanted before the tournament....unless of course you have any plans to take this offshore or into deep water (I guess you do live near the blackwood).

Before the comp i said to a few people i was after a new sounder for up the front so i definitely want it!

My main concern is that if i have it at the console and drive over a spot that looks good, ive more than likely just scared every fish out of the water with the 2 stroke outboard. If i had an ocean going boat and was looking for bait schools underwater or big dropoffs etc, then i would have it at the wheel for sure.  If it was a Navman i would do this as well as they can be hooked up to mercury outboards for diagnostics. But because i already have the basic sounder and we fish the banks and areas just off the banks while under electric power i would want the better sounder showing me whats at my feet. Places like the blackwood you have a transducer at the back and while your fishing the bank the sounder is reading behind you, not over the rock bar your fishing or similar. I have found a few times by fishing at the back of the previous boat and on the old punt, fish have been sounded out sitting off the bank a bit but only when the transducer was at my feet. Obviously fishing flats and stuff it wont really matter but the kalgan, murray, blackwood- all regular comp locations have spots where a sounder at my feet will come in handy.

The current lowrance does fine at sounding dropoffs and the like if i motor over them but isnt really a super duper fish finding tool like the eagle. I do know if i sold it, i would just spend it on more fishing tackle which i have plenty of so this is a prize that i will be keeping for sure.

Still alot of people have basic sounders up the front and more elaborate ones down the back. Im not sure why...

g'day mate,

how big is the unit? any chance of flush mounting it in the angled bit of deck at the bow? logic behind that is that it keeps another bulky bit of gear out of the way in a deck area that can get fairly crowded when your fishing ... i can vouch for that after the weekend LOL . plus i reckon it would look slick if you could manage it there....

sorry to disagree with a few of you here, but if i was to mount it i would place it on the Kota. i currently have one there thats the same shape as yours (its not as good though) and its awsome, i was in the same position you are in now and decided that the better quality should be up the front at my feet because when your going along something like the blackwood drop offs; Like you do it gives you the best picture possible, and its not like your going driving around under the main motor to spot bream on the sounder it is done while on the kota (for me anyway).

Have to say in the comp the Eagle sounder helped heaps with confidence in particular spots as you can turn the kota and scan everything and workout where they are and cast in that area.

Interesting reply Jimmy.
I tend to agree with you guys on the idea that for breamin a sounder on the front is probably a better option (Brad's leaning to this I think).

However...if I had the intention of using it for snapper bouncing and and likes I'd have it at the console.

Macca i will try to mount it on that but without looking at it, my guess would be it wont fit. Otherwise i will put it on its mount on that angled bit anyway and just angle it back so its easier to look at. Its a fair ol sized sounder.

I cant put it on until i look at the new electric and work that problem out either. I got some pics of them but pending on how quick the turning speed is, i may opt for the motorguide to stay on it.

James its good to see im not going to be the only one with the good one up the front.

New sounder... where to put it?

In a post-pack, addressed to John Ducksbury... Oh wait...

All you guys with your fancy toys. Stick it up front with the leccy I reckon.

If you decide you want a better sounder on the console, you will realise how valuable the awesome one at the front is and just upgrade them both to top of the line gear.

For a console sounder i would love a Navman to hook up with the merc but i have a new rod and trip east to pay for so not a chance for a while yet!
