Hi guys,
Just got back from a 4 day trip in Kalbarri.  Unfortunately the trip didnt go all as planned with crappy weather pretty much the entire time we were there.  It rained for the first time in 12 months much to the pleasure of all the locals, and by rain I mean 3 days straight of on and off rain.  With the rain came winds to 40km/h!!!  Basically it meant fishing reefs and rock ledges for most of the trip was super hard.  The tides were also super super high and I think may have spread the fish out a fair bit in terms of estuary fishing.

I lost a Khasmin to an unknown monster in the blink of an eye fishing rocky outcrops in the River on day one...but that was as exciting as it all got until yesterday (last real day of trip). I woke to 10km/h winds, small swell and no rain.  Unfortunately the tailor werent up to the fun, but big herring and pike gave me at least something to play with around the rock ledges of Red Bluff.  I then had a short fish around the same rocks in the river for nothing more than a small estuary cod, again on the Zipbait Khasmin.

That night I finally gave in and bought some mulies and popped on down to Chinamans for some tailor and mulla fun.  With expectations as low as ever due to not a single positive report from locals and holidaying fisherman all week, I decided to just chill and fish bait off the rocks with Jess.  Jess has a badly busted left ankle so climbing the higher rocks near the mouth was out of the question, so we fished just inside the mouth off the rocks closer to the beach area.  With a full moon and changing tide I did flirt with the idea of some fish actually being landed.

Well the baby mullas were in plague proportions that evening, with every single bait being monstered by the lil soapies, with Jess and I landing about 7 mullas and a few chopper tailor.  For some reason no one else landed a thing...perhaps us using braid and Egrells meant we were feeling every touch and therefore hooking fish others werent even aware of.  Fishing 20lb Fins PRT and an Egrell S10 was a bit overkill, but believe it or not the hook up rate was about 80% better with the heavy line and heavier rod.  The S4 Egrell with 6lb was just not hooking nearly as many fish!

Anyways, no pics as I was a bit devastated that Kalbarri didnt turn it on for me, but at least that last evening gave me a little taste of why people love the place.

Over and out!

The estuary cod I got were very small juvies (in comparison to the big adults), but I two from a 25m stretch.  I think there are a fair few around, but its hard to say having only fished the place a little bit.

It's fair to say the place is absolutely crawling with Soapies though.

Sounds like the weather gods were against you a bit Dave.

At least you got a few, nice part of the country up there when the sun is shining.
