Well I must first apologise for the lack of updates recently. We have been way to busy playing tourist and partying that havent had spare sec to write a blog.
So last post was Ljubljana .....We were really stoked when we went to the train station in Ljubljana and found there was a special on all tickets to Budapest (Half price in fact). However half way through the trip we were questioning our decision when we were told to get off the train and board a bus. (It was meant to be a no transfer, direct train to Budapest). As we didnt understand any of the language, we just followed the pack, boarding one bus then another., getting quite frustrated and annoyed. Anyway we eventually ended up on an even older rackety train which took us to Budapest. And to make the trip even better the teenagers in front of us were listening to Justin Beiber a few decibels too loud. Just the music you want after the terrible travel day we had.
In Budppest we stayed at the Lost Hostel after a strong reccomendation from one of Dave's friends. A small freindly hostel, which felt more like a share house than a hostel. There is a lot to be said for having insider knowledge. The friendly Aussie staff told us heaps of cool places to visit, so we were left wondering whether 5 days would be long enough.
One of the places we went to was Serrius Tea House, which we would never had found if the Loft hadn't suggested it. The only way to descibe it is like a huge indoor playground for adults, with different levels, hiding holes, ropes, mirrors etc.. where you can sit down and enjoy a tea. Sounds a bit bizarre but that was exactly what it was. So this was the start of a very good friendship with tea.
Also on our list of things to do in Budpest would be a visit to the Terror Museum. Definately a bit of an eye opener and a bit depressing. I would definately suggest that you make sure you do something uplifting afterwards whether it be hitting the pubs or stuffing yourself with cakes or baked delights. We chose both. We went to one of the most amazing cake shops I have ever seen, even a trip to the bathroom was an excursion in itself. We couldn't go past trying some out., the cupcake with a amputated finger (aka Dave) on it was a must try.P.s. It was Halloween hence the theme. One thing that is big in Budapest is Ruin Bars, basically old run down biuldings that are turned into interesting, alternative bars. These kind of bars are everywhere and are cheap as well. This turned out to be a good end to the day after the Terror Museum.
So the next night was Halloween, and I am pretty sure the photos from that night speak for themselves. Awesome night packed with very last minute throw together costumes, face paint, great punch (with a twist) and lots of halloween baked goodies.
To recover from Halloween we headed to the Thermal Baths – very popular in Budapest. Apparently they are meant to be a savoiur for a hangover. There are plenty of baths, indoor and outdoor all at different temperatures. The indoor ones smelt a little funky for my liking but the outdoor baths, were a savoiur, however it was freezing cold as soon as you got out. So we spent hours in the baths until we were suitably wrinkly and were more or less forced to move on..... to you guessed it the Pub again. Seems to be a bit of a routine happening here.
I could have stayed longer in Budapest, but Dave wasn't as keen on the city as me. The fact that he got ripped off at a restuarant and got in an argument with the waiter (one speaking English the other Hungarian), may have had something to do with it. (All I could do was laugh). I however loved Budapest and really enjoyed the food, the history and the atmosphere and the many old buildings and sights. Defintely a city to return to one day.

Re: A Hungarian Halloween
Haha just had to comment that the same thing exactly to Kel and I with the train --> bus --> bus --> train scenario last year from Ljubljana to Budapest! And we were equally confused :) but you cant really do anything except go where you're pointed to by the severe Hungarian train women! Love the updates X
